This is a qualitative study about factors shaping the employment-related decisions of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. It discusses implications of the findings for system features that would optimize their employment outcomes. The system elements that emerge as critical include support for family involvement, strong and early links between schools and employment systems, professional development for rehabilitation providers to shift beliefs about the employment potential of students with ID or DD, and services to help transitioning students develop social connectedness.
